From March 20 to May 06, 2012, the McCord Stewart Museum presented an important body of work by Canadian artist-photographer Lynne Cohen, from la Collection Giverny Capital.
Since the early 1970s, Cohen has photographed “found” interior spaces empty of occupants and kept secret, as the tittles of the photographs do not reveal their location. Over time, semi-public or public places - such as skating rinks, dance halls, hotel lobbies or gentlemen's clubs - have given way to more private and difficult-to-access environments, such as classrooms, scientific laboratories or military installations. Despite the uncanny nature of the sites photographed, Cohen emphasizes the humor, artifice, and faux semblance that emerge from these everyday places. Cohen then documents the moment when "the world appears as an echo of art.”
